What’s great about your job?
My career has provided me with the most marvellous opportunities – to work with great colleagues, to develop and extend public library services and to travel. Librarianship is a global profession, and librarians all over the world have the same passions, the same realities and the same experiences. I have travelled through the US, Scandinavia and Europe as part of my job as well as interstate and made many friends all over the world.
What’s the most fun experience you’ve had at work?
Developing and planning major projects – and seeing them come to fruition – like a new Mobile Library, a new branch, a new process. Working as part of a team to create services that make a difference to people’s lives.
Describe a typical day at work.
I don’t have a typical day! But there will be at least one meeting with colleagues, talking to people, developing ideas, problem solving and of course there’s always email to fill in the gaps.
What do you find rewarding and challenging about you job?
Nearly everything but particularly the autonomy, I can make decisions, initiate and implement projects and steer the organisation with the management team within a strategic framework and the budget.
What are the personal skills & attributes that you need to do this job?
Energy, enthusiasm, passion, willingness to take risks, ability to persuade and sell ideas.
