Name: Michelle McLean

Position: Information Librarian (Part Time)

Qualification: BA (Lib), MBIT

Organisation: Casey Cardinia Library Corporation

Previous positions: Readers Advisor, Branch Manager, Dandenong Deputy Services Manager, Information Services Manager

What’s great about your job?

I work with virtual services. I work on our website and other virtual resources, answer email questions, work with our local history officer and branch staff on our virtual services. I am part of our Information Services team which works to provide quality reference service to our users.

What’s the most fun experience you’ve had at work?

Creating new services that are appreciated by users and staff alike. Recently it was creating a Google Maps mashup showing the locations of our branches and mobile library stops.

Describe a typical day at work.

Check email, follow up on things I have read which may be relevant to my library, answer email enquiries, maintain our website – adding new content, deleting old, communicating with other library staff on virtual services, working on new stuff for service delivery.

What do you find rewarding and challenging about you job?

Finding new ways of delivering service to our users, whilst still recognising the validity of established services.

What are the personal skills & attributes that you need to do this job?

Patience, some technical skill, openness to new ideas, willingness to learn and be challenged, perseverance and a hefty dose of optimism helps too!
