Name: Tania Barry

Position: Mill Park Branch Manager

Qualification: Librarian

Organisation: Yarra Plenty Regional Library

Previous positions:personal assistant, child care worker, shelver, library officer, community links project officer, children's librarian, children's and youth library services coordinator

What’s great about your job?

The variety. I love being able to develop programs and activities for the community, start new projects and see them through to the end.

What’s the most fun experience you’ve had at work?

Working on a Wii playoff competition within the library!

Describe a typical day at work.

There is so much to get through.  The day always starts with a visual of the library, to make sure everything is in order, then work on getting the library ready for opening at 10am.  After what happens varies according to the day, programs that are scheduled or staffing.  This can include working on rosters, doing the Branch plan, desk shifts, planning of activities with staff.  There is a lot of future planning in my role.

What do you find rewarding and challenging about your job?

Making a difference in the community. Making a difference to learning outcomes for young children through early childhood literacy programs, making a difference to some youth who are at risk of leaving school by running focused programs for them, improving information literacy skills - the list of where we make a difference goes on...

What are the personal skills & attributes that you need to do this job?

Organisational skills – have to be organised or nothing would get done! Enjoyment of working with customers and running training sessions. People skills are a definite!
