My name is Tania Schafer (nee Bostock). I am an Australian Aboriginal from the Mununjali people on my mother’s side and Bundjalung people on my father’s side; both groups are near the Queensland & New South Wales border and spoke the Yugembah language.
I have worked at the State Library of Queensland for over fifteen years. My first job was as an Administrative Officer, main duties shelving and security. I later completed my Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood - QUT) and became the Indigenous Resource Officer, after Loris Williams resigned. Loris Williams later became the first Aboriginal Queensland Archivist and died on the 28th August 2005.
The Indigenous Resource Officers duties were easy, to work with the Queensland components of the Tindale Collection and make reference sources available in the collections of John Oxley Library. Therefore I created the Tindale Index, attended events, created several guides and internet pages. Due to my publication of the Tindale Genealogy Name Index I was given membership to the Australian Institutes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS), I am still a current member.
As the State Library of Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Equal Opportunity officer and Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA)’s push to support more Aboriginal Librarians, I started a Graduate Diploma in Librarianship (Charles Sturt), with support from the State Library of Queensland.
I enrolled in the Wal-Meta (The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Public Sector Employment Development Unit) Middle Management Course in 2003 and gained a TAFE- Certificate IV in Management. I completed my Diploma in Librarianship in 2004 and was recommended by Lea Giles-Peters for the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) AURORA – Leaderships Institute training for16-21 February 2005 at Thredbo, NSW.
I represent ATSILIRN (Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Library & Information Resource Network Inc – [ http://home.vicnet.net.au/~atsilirn/ ]). The Network was established to support Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people working in libraries, archives and information service centres. I am the current Queensland representative and Newsletter Editor.
